Particularly hard hit were the districts of Banke, Bardiya and Dang in western Nepal, the area that is home to the thousands of the former Kamlari girls that NYF serves with our Empowering Freed Kamlaris program.
Early reports indicate that at least 180 people have died and more than 100 are missing in Nepal and India. An estimated 11,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed and 22,000 families have been displaced by the floods. In the aftermath, there is the threat of disease and hunger.
NYF participants and staff suffer losses
We are still gathering information on how the floods have affected the children and youth we serve in western Nepal, but we fear that hundreds of our NYF participants and staff have lost their homes.
We learned that Suma, the young woman we rescued from Kamlari slavery who was featured in the film Girl Rising, is safe at her vocational school dormitory. But her family lost their home and all their belongings, including the cattle they raise.
And Samir, Santu and Shankar, three brothers who have been living with us at J House since their mother passed away a few years ago, have now lost their father, too. It was heartbreaking to have to tell the boys that their father drowned in the flood waters and won’t be calling anymore.
We’re ready to respond with aid and support — today
The government of Nepal has pledged to provide financial and material assistance to flood victims, but news reports and information from our staff in the affected areas indicate that relief materials are slow to arrive. Some say it may be several weeks until government relief is distributed.
But NYF’s staff is ready and able to reach our program participants and their families right now. With your donations, we can immediately purchase and distribute food, tents, clothing and medicines.
Your help urgently needed!
Many thousands of you have already given so much to provide NYF’s life-changing services for the children and youth of Nepal, and we are always grateful for your support.
But right now, those children, youth and their families need even more.
You can make a difference. Please make a special gift to our Flood Relief Campaign and help us provide desperately needed aid right away via a much appreciated online donation:
Thank you for caring about the children of Nepal.
